28 June 2009

Please excuse my absence from the blog lately. But this is what has been going on:

My work day has been painfully stretched from 7am to 8pm at times, and free time at the sunset has been spent by the pool at my parent’s house surrounded by three beautiful cats. None of us went in the water, we just lingered and watched mosquitoes and dragonflies fly by – and that’s what I call bliss.
Now back to another kind of bliss – coffee, cakes and fashion blogs on Sunday, of course! It’s a daily routine, but Sunday’s laziness makes the perfect circumstance for a couple of new blog links:
One Perfect Morning is from Australia and relatively new, but what a content! Make sure you read all her interviews with designers including Vika Gazinskaya and Laura Mackness. Plus she is a slave to the wedges, just like myself.

Garbage dress has been a long-term addiction of mine. Read for the best Paris menswear fashion week coverage so far.

Moreover, I’ve been brainstorming and collecting images with one wonderful purpose – a 10 piece capsule wardrobe of my own making should soon be available to purchase in Antwerp. How soon – is a question of timing within rather tight schedule – the due date is in August...And that's what it's all about:

She claims her jewellery to be not the final touch but the cornerstone of personal style. Those massive golden pieces styled together with bodycon bustier dresses and voluminous padded t-shirts are indeed a part of one unique look where the jewellery plays the primordial role. And down to the straight tinted eyebrows of the model these looks are so perfect! It makes my wardrobe too scream out in desperate need for some massive chunks of gold, an eyebrow pencil, and yes, you've guessed it – yet another item with shoulderpads. Please excuse if I have bored you to death with endless shoulderpad sightings – it’s the high demand item that I can’t have enough of.

heavy metal anyone?

If you don’t want to hear any more about shoes from me, skip this one, as my latest shoe crushes are getting more and more absurd.
We’ve all heard about the Raf Simons/Dr. Martens colab a while ago. The collection has been presented at Bread&Butter without any release dates whatsoever. Today I came across an image of these metallic shoes from the fall/winter 09 collection.
So where are those going to be sold, would they be a decent price (not like the Eastpack/Simons backpacks, please) and do they come in ladies’ sizes? And most importantly, I’m already a sculprural/shoulderpads/black lipstick addict with a shaven/asymmetric haircut (not at all the pretty femme La Roux style though) – can I pull off a pair of metallic Dr. Martens boots without passing for a total wacko?

top dog

If any of you haven’t made it to the Veronique Branquinho stocksale yet, do not despair, you still have Monday to Friday of fun. There was so much stuff on the double-decker rails that half of it was not available to public because there was not enough space to display everything. I wish I could show a picture, but my camera suddenly decided to make grasshopper-like noises instead of switching itself on.

So in the end of an hour-long fittings and decisions I walked away with a blazer/dress/coat in black wool. It has oversized sloping shoulders and shoulderpads that are integrated higher than the shoulder seams, and answers perfectly the popular demand of nowadays – sculpted, oversized, shoulderpads, masculine, coat-as-a-dress. It also comes in beige, and I first got acquainted with it on the pages of the winter issue of Qvest international, which has mysteriously disappeared! My favourite photoshoot, called Top Dog, in which I’ve been literally living is nowhere to be found! A tragic loss it is.

So Veronique Branquinho has always been about the wool, silk and lurex to me, mixing masculine and feminine in neutral tones. The awkwardness of wearing a knitted wool body, nylon flesh-coloured tights and an oversized blazer shows so much femininity that no lace or satin can bear. It is of course the very harsh side of the femininity, and perhaps not the most popular one, but as the fashion mags get more and more saturated with ‘nude is the new black’ styling, praise to Raf Simons’ gender blending references, and endless articles on Jürgen Teller’s work – Veronique B stands as an absolute icon to all of the above.

Very happy with my eco-wall indeed!

outfits galore

Honestly, I’m becoming a fan of outfit posts. Lately I’ve been trying to find a way to take the outfit pictures, but I still get given into the magic extractor craze and end up with a photoshoped version of me+outfit+kitchen door. It shall do for starters…I must admit that for once I’ve put some effort into dressing not head-to-toe in COS.
This is the supermarket-friendly version of what I wore to the Antwerp academy show, by the way. Please excuse the head…where was that strawberry pic again?...

some curious facts about today

· Got a phonecall from some IT guy in Stockholm who was so impressed with my Swedish skills – ok, I know how to say ‘Hej då’ – he called me back pretending he needed to check that program again.

· The landlord is back, so no more rent payment delays and making up excuses of being abroad.

· I bow to those who actually manage to comment on this blog – many thanks for your sweet words! I’ve got no idea where the comment line went; it has been that way from the very beginning, so it must be the html template, but I’ve read it through and through and still find nothing that could block the comments. So once again, you can comment by going to the post’s page – by clicking on the title.

· I’ve been contemplating on getting those ACNE jeans with cut out details, to wear them with a very plain silk blouse that looks more like a pyjama shirt…the blouse is COS and is NOT on sale. I spent the evening wondering who in their own mind would be buying that thing except for myself and unless it’s worn with the aforementioned jeans.

monday's outfit post

It’s been so long since the descent outfit post! So I thought I’d treat you, darlings, with one.
Don’t mean to be boring, but all the clothes are COS, except for the shoes, that I picked up lately at my favourite smelly second-hand shop in Brussels, called Retro Paradise.

Fashion Academy Show 2009, Antwerp

A while ago I promised to write a few words about the La Cambre show, but after another wonderful catwalk at Antwerp Academy, I’ve decided to drop this idea. Why? Well, here are just some of my favourite collections – I’m struggling to pick a real favourite, yet I can surely say that Paula Selby Avellaneda has won my heart with a mayhem of wigs, sequins, Underground shoes and batman-esque ears.

Astrid Peeters’ collection possessed that unique mystery that Antwerp designers can create with their clothes. Heavy capes and hooded coats revealed multi-printed dresses, somewhat reminiscent of Christian Wijnants’ work.

Mariel Manuel’s spectacular pieces – a massive tulle and fur galore, yet each silhouette was so sweet and fragile at sight!

Further unicorn-meets-Chanel outfits at Matthiew Thouvenot…

…and crystal castles of Irina Shaposnikova.

Plus being awkwardly acquainted with Yvan, getting wasted on champagne at Bruno Pieters’ b-day, and finding some good old ex-classmates of mine – the night was a part-e-y! Next time, same place!

Veronique Branquinho stocksale

The Facebook wonderland has taught me something new today! There shall be an off-schedule Veronique Branquinho stocksale on June 18th and 19th and 20 to 26. So basically it is about a week of bargain madness, in the sense that is great because the high-street sales do not attract me in any way at all, and in the sense that is incredibly sad because one of the most beautiful brands made in Belgium shall soon seize to exist. Some pieces to be sold during that week date back to 98 – once again sad, but yet a great chance to own a bit of Belgian fashion history.

Push It magazine

I must admit that I have always been a magazine freak, and when someone tells me ‘oh you’re so clever, you must be reading a lot of books’ I blush, because my book-reading skills and the concentration level are piss poor. But when I get a hold of a magazine…oh, that’s a totally different story! What can be more exciting than a premiere issue of a brand new art/fashion magazine from some remote part of the world? Even the Egyptian pyramids turn to boring molehills.
So let me introduce you Push It magazine, which is limited to 1000 copies in print, but is well available in a digital format at www.pushitmagazine.com. It covers Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina's fashion mixing the best of the Balkans with the rest of the world.
I love she fashion story called ‘ And sometimes it doesn’t make sense’ styled and photographed by Louis Park.

la cambre 09

All around the world this time of the year is known as the Graduates Fashion Week. But if you want to follow the real one, go now to Stylebubble – probably the best coverage there is. Here in Belgium it is not a functional fashion week, but is more like two weekends with two most distinct shows of the year – La Cambre in BXL and Academy of Antwerp.
Last weekend it was the La Cambre’s turn to show some talent, yet apart from a few general crowd-pleasers and some interesting details I haven’t really found much to look out for in the future. And I must admit that nicking forgotten VIP packages from underneath someone’s seat has become a habit and an answer to the fact that bloggers don’t get a press-pass! So I’ll post more reviews and pictures together with Antwerp, but for now some lazy shots of a gorgeous beige cape-coat shall suffice.

I wish I could hold your hand in Venice

Weekday has produced another wonder with a collection entitled 'Today I am strong'! These images are odd and fascinating at the same time and there’s something of Magritte’s surrealism in the styling. I love the round sunglasses, extra long coats, volume and subtle sheen of the fabric, sheer white stockings and golden velvet. Somehow all this makes perfect sense, and once again I’m recalling the phrase of The Sartoralist, who commented that the Swedish girls are so beautiful that they hide themselves underneath volumes of colourless cloth and that the shoes that they wear are almost orthopaedic. This shall always remain the uncompromising and timeless Scandinavian style.
